For The Love of Cuban Frita Sliders

With it being National Burger Day yesterday, I had to celebrate but was not really in the mood for a regular burger. What the inner Cuban in me really wanted was a Cuban Frita. I figured I could make it an appetizer and instead make tiny Cuban Frita sliders for everyone to enjoy! To be quite honest, I have had a Cuban frita only once or twice in my life and they were delicious. Obviously in New York they are hard to come by, but with me visiting the mother land, aka Miami and on National Burger Day, I had to make a frita of my own.

Frita sliders with all their delicious goodness

The chorizo in the burger adds a delicious kick to it, topped with a spicy mayo and ketchup mixture. You are going to want to have more than one slider, and you know what, that’s okay because there are no rules during quarantine! We are all wearing sweat pants either way, right?!

How to make the Patty of a Cuban Frita

Cuban Fritas are typically made with a combination of ground meat, whether it is beef, chorizo, or pork. You can even combine all three. For this recipe, I combined chorizo and beef together. I suggest buying the chorizo that is not cooked yet and found in the meat department. Remove the outer casing of them so you only have the inner filling. Then, combine the inner filling with the beef, add the spices, onion bread crumbs, and an egg and mix it all together.

To make a traditional frita, the patty should be pretty thin, so I roll them into balls and squish them to make about a quarter inch patty. Then, fry them in a pan over low-medium heat. If the heat is too high, the frita will burn very quickly, so make sure to have the heat at the right temperature. Once cooked, add the cheese, and let it melt until you have that nice gooey goodness. Stack your frita up and enjoy!

Servings: 10 sliders

Ingredients

  • ½ lb. Lean ground beef
  • ½ lb. Chorizo links
  • 1 tlbs Salt
  • 1 tlbs Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • cup Onions Diced
  • 1 cup Bread Crumb
  • 1 Egg
  • 10 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup Red onions diced

Fries

  • 3 Russet potatoes
  • Oil
  • Salt

Spicy Mayo Ketchup

  • cup Ketchup
  • cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp Red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • ¼ tsp Black pepper

Instructions

  • Remove the outer covering of the chorizo by making a hole in the tip and squeezing the chorizo out.
  • In a bowl, combine the chorizo, ground beef, salt, garlic powder, black pepper, cumin, diced onion, bread crumbs, and egg. Mix to combine all the ingredients.
  • Break the meat apart, and roll into about 1-1 ½ inch balls. Flatten the ball to make about ¼ inch patty.
  • To make the fries, use a deep fryer or a large pot, heat up about a 1-2 inches of oil, until 350F.  Wash the russets potatoes and julienne them (Cut into thin long strips to make thin fries.) Once the oil is hot, place the thinly cut fries inside, and cook for about 1-2 minutes, until golden brown. Remove from oil, and sprinkle salt.
  • To make the patties, generously coat a pan with oil and heat over low-medium heat.  Once hot, place the sliders into the pan. Cook for two minutes, then flip. Cook for three minutes, flip one more time, and place the cheese on top. Cover the pan with a lid and let the cheese melt. About 1 minute.
  • While the sliders are cooking, combine the ketchup, mayo, red wine vinegar, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and paprika in a bowl. Stir to combine.
  • Dice the red onion and set aside.
  • When the sliders are finished being cooked, you are ready to build your frita sliders. Place the patty on the bread, add the diced onions and fries on top, spread the spicy ketchup mayo mix on the top bun and place it on the burger. I hope you enjoy!
